George Dunmow posted an update
Cranio Sacral-Therapy

The body's cerebrospinal fluid is like a hydraulic pump. Subtle pulses of this fluid circulate around the brain and spinal cord, nourishing all tissues that make up the central nervous system.

Sometimes, whether from emotional or physical stress, the fluid becomes obstructed. The blockage contributes to pain and dysfunction. It can worsen or trigger migraine headaches, chronic neck or back pain, colic in babies, fatigue and other health problems. Blockage can occur at any age, even at birth.

"A lot of times babies go through trauma during delivery," explains Sarah Beth Danielsen, a CranioSacral therapist who now provides services at Greenwich Hospital's Center for Integrative Medicine in Cos Cob, CT. "Sometimes it's through c-section or extraction. Imagine the comfort of the womb environment. A baby is supposed to come out slowly, but sometimes a baby needs to be pulled out quickly and that can create trauma," Danielsen adds.

Danielsen received her training at the Upledger Institute where osteopathic physician John E. Upledger pioneered and developed this therapy after extensive scientific studies and clinical research. CransioSacral therapy involves a very gentle, hands-on touch no heavier than a coin. The therapist uses touch to locate and release blockage of the craniosacral fluid, causing a self-correcting response and deep relaxation. The patient wears loose-fitting, lightweight clothing; treatment lasts about an hour.

CransioSacral therapy safely complements the body's natural healing processes, and is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to improve resiliency. The Upledger Institute's research shows that CranioSacral therapy can help:

- Migraine headaches
- Chronic neck and back pain
- Motor-Coordination impairments
- Infant colic
- Scoliosis
- Chronic fatigue
- Emotional difficulties
- Stress and tension-related problems
- Fibromyalgia and other connective-tissue disorders
- Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)

Craniosacral Therapy Increasingly Used by Elderly

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- Craniosacral therapy, a light-touch, hands-on therapy, is an increasingly popular alternative modality that may provide substantial benefits to older adults, according to a study by a researcher at RTI International.

The author of the exploratory study, published in the January issue of The International Journal of Healing and Caring, said that the use of craniosacral therapy to manage pain, facilitate rehabilitation, and reduce agitation and hypertension, among others, appeared promising and should be further investigated.

"This study does not establish effectiveness of craniosacral therapy for any specific medical condition, but it does suggest that the therapy may provide substantial benefits to older adults," said Edie Walsh, Ph.D., RTI health services researcher. "In the future, clinical studies could be conducted to determine the effectiveness of craniosacral therapy for treating specific clinical conditions."

Craniosacral therapy detects and corrects imbalances in the membranes and fluids that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord and releases restrictions in the connective tissues throughout the body. Patients seek the therapy to treat ailments such as migraines, neck and back pain, orthopedic problems, stress and tension-related problems, autism and chronic fatigue.

As part of the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 advanced cransiosacral therapy practitioners from 14 states and a variety of professions, including massage, physical and occupational therapy. The author also reviewed information on 52,000 individuals trained in craniosacral therapy by the Upledger Institute, the main training program for craniosacral therapy in the United States.

The practitioners reported that after craniosacral therapy treatments their older clients frequently experienced substantial pain reduction and were often able to discontinue or reduce their reliance on pain medications. Physical and occupational therapists reported that the diminished pain allowed their clients to more fully participate in rehabilitation exercises.

"According to the practitioners, most older patients seek the therapy to relieve pain," Walsh said. "Craniosacral therapy is particularly suited to older adults because it applies very little pressure and allows clients to remain clothed, avoiding the physical and social challenges associated with undressing."

The popularity of the therapy continues to increase. Over the past 20 years, the Upledger Institute has increased its introductory level classes from less than 40 to more than 200 each year and the number of other training programs has also increased.

George Dunmow posted an update What’s the best way to find out about Craniosacral Therapy?

Obviously the most effective way to find out about Craniosacral Therapy is to have a session yourself. However, if you prefer to get an impression in advance, the best way to do that is to ask someone who has already had CST. That’s not going to be possible for everyone so you may want to contact a practitioner – this has the advantage of getting a sense of what the practitioner is like as well as being able to ask specific questions about Craniosacral Therapy.

George Dunmow posted an update Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of healing which, through light touch, facilitates the body’s natural powers of self-healing. At the core of the craniosacral system are the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord and which create subtle motions and pulsations throughout the whole body.

These different tide-like pulsations are an interface enabling the therapist to make a connection with the organising forces of life (sometimes called ‘the breath of life’). In craniosacral therapy, palpating these pulsations enables therapists to access the breath of life and to make a therapeutic relationship with the body–mind through their hands.

Thus therapists can gently release tensions and restrictions from past (or current) illnesses, accidents, emotional trauma, etc. It is a non-manipulative discipline that has developed from the same roots as cranial osteopathy.
How does it work?
The therapy is based on observations that, for the healing process to develop spontaneously, it is often enough to really listen through palpation. To do this the therapist puts preconceptions to one side. Cranial therapists are also trained to make a variety of interventions if appropriate.

By focusing on the body’s internal rhythms and allowing restrictions to change, therapists help the client to learn, on both a conscious and subconscious personal level, how to recognise and release areas that may be causing illness or hindering recovery.

The therapist will always also be aware of the anatomical structure of the person he or she is working with and use that to guide the treatment. Therapists recognise a number of different rhythms or ‘tides’; the slower tides are thought to be more related to deeper levels of healing.

What does it involve?
Clients usually lie, or sometimes sit, fully clothed on a comfortable treatment couch. The therapist uses his or her hands to ‘listen with the hands’ to the body’s subtle rhythms and then engages the tissues of the client's system. The hands may be still for quite long periods of time.

It feels different for everyone – you may feel heat or cold, tingling sensations, gentle pulsing or sense of deep relaxation. Sometimes people have a clear sense of significant physical or psychological reorganisation.

Traumatic memories or episodes can be released via low-level emotional releases. Sometimes the therapist may ask questions about what the client is feeling to assist the process. The number of sessions required depends on the reason for treatment, varying from one or two sessions, to regular treatments over a long period of time in difficult conditions. This therapy does not involve manipulation or massage.
What is it good for?
A wide variety of disorders can benefit from CST: from back pain, headaches and migraines to stress-related and emotional problems, including difficult conditions such as autism. It is particularly suited to the treatment of babies and young children. CST is effective in treating problems arising from a difficult birth.

Who can benefit?
Anyone can benefit, but because it is so gentle, craniosacral therapy is suitable for children and elderly people, as well as those with acutely painful conditions that are difficult to treat with other hands-on therapies. It is also often appropriate when other therapies may be contraindicated, for example, during pregnancy or after an operation.

What are the side effects and when should it be avoided?
There are no side effects as such but therapists would exercise caution when working with women in the early stages of pregnancy or people who have recently suffered a stroke (although it can also be very helpful for treating people in both these groups).
